During the Civil War, twenty-two Kentucky courthouses were burned, including nineteen in the last fifteen months: twelve by Confederates, eight by guerrillas, and two by Union accident. On Dec. 28, 1864, guerrillas set fire to the courthouse at Hardinsburg, but citizens saved the building and its records. Confederate forces then came in and allowed the public to keep arms for defense.
