In January 2025, the Eaton Fire swept through Eaton Canyon, and dangerous debris flows in February and March dramatically altered the terrain with uneven ground, loose soil, falling rocks, fallen trees, mud, boulders, and debris that reshaped or buried hiking trails, making the area unsafe and closed to the public with no entry permitted. Following these natural disasters, the canyon's natural world is recovering, and allowing people into the area can damage delicate regrowth, increase erosion by harming plants that hold soil in place, and hurt local wildlife that depends on plants for food, water, shelter, and space.
