In 1868, the Highland Park Building Company built the first public building on this site. It contained the first city offices and community and religious meeting rooms. James McDonald bought it, and it became McDonald's Store and Hall. The city's first bank opened here in 1899. The building was razed in 1907, and the present building, now the First National Bank of Highland Park, was completed in 1909.
