LeConte Falls is a 229-foot cascade on the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada. It is the second largest waterfall on the Tuolumne, below Waterwheel Falls, which lies about 0.6 miles downstream in the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne. The falls took their present name in 1894, when Robert M. Price meant to honor Professor Joseph LeConte. The name resulted from a mistake: Price intended “LeConte Falls” for the waterfall now called Waterwheel Falls, but a mapmaker applied it instead to the cataract then known as California Falls. The error stuck and became the standard name.
