Captain Peter S. Mackey of Station 1 died on July 23, 1942; Firefighter Stanley J. O'Brien of Squad 1 at Silver Lake and Motor Operator Ambrose J. Riley of Ladder 1 at Silver Lake died on December 24, 1953; and Motor Operator Otis D. Ondler of Ladder 42 died at the Rundell Lumber Fire on January 23, 1976. Shortly after 1 p.m. on December 24, 1953, below this overlook, O'Brien and Riley answered their last call while attempting to rescue 9-year-old John Paul Stephenson from the lake's icy waters, and all were lost. Their memory stands with all Rochester firefighters who lost their lives while selflessly serving the citizens of the community.
