Nitre Hall, on Cobbs Creek in Haverford Township, Pennsylvania, was built shortly after 1800 by Israel Whelen Jr. as the home of the master of the nearby Nitre Hall Powder Mills. Although the mills have vanished, the house remains as a historic site that preserves both its industrial origins and later museum use. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, it has custodians’ quarters on the ground floor, Empire and Victorian-decorated rooms above, and a top floor used for temporary exhibits and the Colonial Living Experience. Operated by the Haverford Township Historical Society, it now serves especially as an educational site for school and group visits.
