In 1878, while camped near this spot on a fishing trip, Thomas A. Edison's attention was directed to the fiber from his bamboo fishing pole, which he tested as a suitable filament for his incandescent electric lamp. He was born February 11, 1847, and died October 18, 1931, at age 84.
