Building Liberty Park was about more than playground equipment; it was an effort to build a sense of community in Parkland. From conceptualization to completion, residents led the project by raising funds, gathering materials, and organizing the workforce to build a new park. The Parkland Commission set aside seven acres for the project, the Build-A-Park committee planned fund-raising events, and the City contributed matching grant funds. Each park component and playground feature had an associated donation amount, with the goal that every family in Parkland would contribute to making the initiative a reality. In the spirit of an old-fashioned barn raising, residents young and old joined in to help their city. During Building Week, February 12 to February 19, 2001, the community built the structures, and on November 3, 2001, the Build-A-Park committee and City Commission dedicated Liberty Park.
