Discovered in 1863 by Henry Wickenburg and his burro, the Vulture Mine helped spur the development of the Salt River Valley's irrigated agricultural industry to supply the needs of the mines and protecting military camps. Producing 10 millions in gold, it was the greatest single factor in the settlement of central Arizona. Wickenburg died by his own hand in 1905 at the age of 86.
