Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park near Yarnell, Arizona preserves the site where nineteen members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots died on June 30, 2013, while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire. Authorized in 2014, the park took shape after state land was purchased in 2015 and was dedicated in 2016 before opening to the public. Its memorial experience centers on a strenuous hiking trail that climbs to an overlook and then descends to the fatality site. There, nineteen rock baskets form a circle around the place where the men died, while granite plaques, benches, and signs along the route honor each firefighter and unite landscape, loss, and remembrance.
