Wingate Sandstone
Nature
1
Wingate Sandstone is a major geologic formation of the Colorado Plateau, exposed across northern Arizona, northwestern Colorado, Nevada, and Utah, and especially prominent in southeastern Utah. Part of the Glen Canyon Group, it commonly lies below the Kayenta Formation and Navajo Sandstone, together forming towering cliff walls that can rise more than 2,000 feet. Its pale orange to red color and texture come from vast wind-blown dunes deposited about 200 million years ago. Once regarded as entirely Early Jurassic, the formation was later shown by fossils, including a phytosaur skull, to extend back into the Late Triassic, making it a key element of canyon country scenery and geologic history.
