McGinty Mountain, near Jamul in San Diego County, California, is a gabbroic peak within a jointly managed ecological preserve known for unusual soil low in key nutrients and high in metals. Those conditions sustain a distinctive community of rare and endemic plants, including more than half of California's population of Dehesa nolina, as well as San Diego thornmint, San Miguel savory, and Parry's tetracoccus. As part of a coastal sky island zone in San Diego County and northwestern Baja California, it shelters specialized species on its chaparral and rocky slopes. The mountain also retains hazardous remains of early twentieth-century mining for porcelain materials and takes its name from a miner called McGinty.
