Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area is a 6,100-acre protected refuge near Jamul and Dulzura in southern California that connects the Otay Mountain Wilderness with the Jamul Mountains as a vital wildlife corridor. Once part of Rancho Jamul, a Mexican land grant to Pio Pico in 1831, the land later passed through several owners, including the Burton family, farmers, a San Diego entrepreneur, a former mayor, and the Daley family, who operated a truck farm and cattle ranch. In 2001 California acquired the former ranch to conserve and restore habitat for sensitive species, including San Diego sedge and the sedge witch butterfly, while allowing compatible public recreation.
