Otay Mountain in southern California is the highest summit of the San Ysidro Mountains and rises within the Otay Mountain Wilderness, where its south face follows the Mexico-United States border. Its name comes from the Kumeyaay word otai, meaning “brushy,” reflecting its vegetation. Fire has repeatedly altered the landscape, with plant life described as completely burned in 2003 and another wildfire in 2007. The mountain is also remembered for a 1991 plane crash that killed all 10 aboard, including seven members of Reba McEntire’s band, her business manager, and two pilots. A border fence along its south face has sparked criticism over wilderness and habitat impacts.
