Champ Ferguson was born here in 1821. A guerrilla leader with Confederate leanings, he attacked supporters of both sides throughout the Civil War in southern Kentucky and Tennessee. More than 100 murders were ascribed to Ferguson alone. He was hunted by both the Confederacy and the United States, taken after the end of the war, convicted by a U.S. Army court in Nashville, and hanged on Oct. 20, 1865. He was buried at home in White County, Tennessee.
