The John Wise House was erected in 1701 by John Wise, pastor of the Chebacco parish of Ipswich, now Essex. John Wise, the son of a laborer, was a Harvard graduate, an army chaplain, a protestant against taxation without representation and against the witchcraft delusion, a defender of democracy in the church, and a brilliant prose writer.
