One half mile north stood the home of Gen. Nathaniel Massie, founder of Manchester in 1791, the first settlement in the Virginia Military District. It was also the residence of Charles Willing Byrd, Secretary and Acting Governor of the Northwest Territory and the first United States District Judge for Ohio. Nearby, Israel Donalson, a delegate from Adams County to the first Constitutional Convention of Ohio and its last surviving member, was captured by Indians in 1791.
