Adena Burial Mound
History
3
An Adena burial mound from the Woodland Period, 1000BC-AD700, was flooded about 1890 by new Ohio River dams. The Ohio Valley was a center of Adena culture, also known as the Mound Builders. Thousands of burial mounds along the river seemed like natural terrain to early settlers. Expansion in farming and industry destroyed most of the mounds, and artifacts recovered from them were placed in museums.
