Covered bridges on backroads have long stirred ghost stories, legends, and humorous tales, while also preserving memories for those who walked their gloomy lengths at sunset. The Knowlton Covered Bridge was built in 1887 as a multiple-kingpost truss and arch bridge. Also known as Long Bridge, it is a three-span, 192-foot bridge and one of the two longest covered bridges in the state. It stands high above the river on cut-stone abutments and was raised at some point to keep it above floodwaters. Abandoned many years ago, it also reflects the era when covered bridges were admired as masterpieces of engineering and were popularly called kissing bridges and wishing bridges because their dark interiors encouraged courtship and inspired wishes.
