Horseneck Beach State Reservation is a major public recreation area on the Atlantic coast in Westport, Massachusetts, spanning more than 800 acres on a peninsula between Rhode Island Sound and Buzzards Bay. Its landscape includes a barrier beach, marshland, and a protected estuary, with Gooseberry Neck connected by causeway at the southern end. The area became a summer colony after a bridge opened in 1893, but hurricanes in 1938 and 1954 destroyed nearly all the homes. After the state acquired Horseneck West Beach in 1956 and Gooseberry Neck in 1957, the reservation developed into one of Massachusetts’s busiest coastal parks, serving both recreation and wildlife habitat.
