Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, preserves a rare botanical landscape on and around Little Monadnock Mountain. Its most notable feature is a sixteen-acre grove of Rhododendron maximum, the largest of nineteen similar stands in central and northern New England and at the northern limit of the species’ natural range; it became a National Natural Landmark in 1982. The park’s preservation owes much to Mary Lee Ware, who bought the land in 1902 after plans to cut the woodland and gave it to the Appalachian Mountain Club on condition that it be protected and kept open to the public. Today it remains both a recreation area and a refuge for native plant life.
