Stevens Pass Ski Area, on the crest of Stevens Pass in Washington’s Cascade Range along U.S. Route 2, became an important day-use ski destination for both Seattle-area skiers and communities east of the range. Developed beginning in the winter of 1937–38 by Don Adams and Bruce Kehr with local commercial support, it expanded from an early lodge and basic facilities into a major resort with dozens of runs, varied front-side and backside terrain, notable lifts, night skiing, and a Nordic Center east of the pass. Despite ownership changes, operational criticism, and nearby avalanche tragedies, it remains one of Washington’s best-known ski areas.
