Originally built in Toledo, Ohio, in 1901, this Great Lakes passenger ship served routes on Lake Michigan before the U.S. Navy bought and commissioned her as USS Puritan during World War I. She was decommissioned in 1919, returned to civilian service through the 1920s, and was later refitted by entrepreneur George Cox and renamed George M. Cox. On her first cruise under that name, she struck shoals in fog near Isle Royale on May 27, 1933. All 127 people aboard survived, but the vessel broke up and sank. The wreck now lies in Lake Superior, is a noted dive site, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
