PS Cumberland was a wooden-hulled side paddlewheeler built in 1871 for the Northern Railway of Canada’s Lake Superior service and named for Fred W. Cumberland. Its career was marked by repeated mishaps, including being frozen in ice, nearly sinking in a storm, and running aground more than once before its final loss in 1877 near Isle Royale. After passengers were safely removed, efforts to save the vessel failed, and it broke apart and sank. The wreck now lies off Isle Royale as an archaeological site listed on the National Register of Historic Places, notable as the only known Lake Superior wreck of its size, type, and period.
