Built in 1927-28 as a colonial revival mansion, this community house was created in memory of local resident Rebecca Wells Milliken by her philanthropist daughter, Mary Louis Milliken, and Mary’s husband Samuel Canning Childs, who also built hospitals and churches throughout the U.S. and abroad. Officially opened in April 1928 in an elaborate two-day celebration, Milliken Memorial Community House is thought to be the first privately donated house in America built for that purpose. Besides providing a suitable location for civic groups to meet, the elaborate structure includes an auditorium, ballroom, and library, the first in Todd Co. It was designed by Geo. Koyl of Marr & Holman Architects.
