Hinman Settler Road begins at Greensboro’s Four Corners, passes through Glover, Barton, and Brownington, and ends at the Quebec border in Derby. It was named for Timothy Hinman, born in 1761 in Woodbury, Connecticut, one of many Revolutionary War veterans who migrated north. He arrived in the small settlement of Greensboro on the Bayley-Hazen Road in 1792 and used roadbuilding and surveying skills learned in the army to begin cutting a trail north through the wilderness toward Canada with a small crew. Hinman successfully established the town of Derby, but his hopes of facilitating trade with Britain were diminished by President Jefferson’s trade embargo beginning in 1807. Even so, the road north encouraged settlement.
