Hurd State Park in East Hampton occupies the east bank of the Connecticut River beside George Dudley Seymour State Park. Named for the Hurd family, who arrived from Massachusetts in 1710, it began with Connecticut’s purchase of its first 150 acres in 1914. A later dispute over feldspar mining rights led to a legal battle with Jesse S. Miller, which the state won in the Connecticut State Supreme Court in 1935. The park is important today as a riverfront recreation area for hiking, picnicking, and mountain biking, and as one of only four Connecticut state parks offering primitive camping for boaters on the river.
