In September 1812, during the War of 1812, Sergeant Nathan Fairbanks and approximately a dozen soldiers were escorting supplies from Fort Knox near Vincennes to Fort Harrison at Terre Haute when they were ambushed about three miles west-southwest of here by Indians, and most were killed.
