Mount Merritt is a remote 10,009-foot summit in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park in northeastern Montana. One of only six peaks in the park above 10,000 feet, it rises a vertical mile above nearby rivers, giving it exceptional prominence even in a landscape known for steep, glaciated terrain. Reaching its base requires a one-way hike of about 13 miles, and the Old Sun Glacier clings to its east ridge near the top, reinforcing its rugged character. The mountain was named in 1891 by members of Troop C, 1st Cavalry, from Fort Assiniboine for General Wesley Merritt, and it remains a major landmark in an isolated part of the park.
