Ahern Glacier
Nature
Ahern Glacier lies in Glacier National Park in northern Montana, just east of the Continental Divide on a ridge between Ipasha Peak and Ahern Peak. It extends from about 8,800 feet to 8,000 feet in elevation and was named for George Patrick Ahern. A notable feature is Ahern Glacier Falls, where meltwater drops an estimated 1,680 feet in a single sheer plunge before reaching the talus slope below and flowing toward Helen Lake. The glacier has also diminished over time: between 1966 and 2005, it lost 13 percent of its surface area, reflecting the broader retreat of ice in Glacier National Park.
