Romer Shoal Light is a sparkplug lighthouse in Lower New York Bay at the entrance to New York Harbor, near the Swash Channel and close to the New York-New Jersey border. Its name comes from Romer Shoal, associated with Colonel Wolfgang William Romer, who sounded New York Bay in 1700 under orders from the colony’s governor, tying the site to some of the harbor’s earliest formal surveys. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 as Romer Shoal Light Station, it is recognized for architectural, engineering, transportation, and maritime significance. Though heavily damaged during Hurricane Sandy, it remains an important navigational feature and is being preserved through nonprofit stewardship.
