Plum Beach Light, a compact offshore sparkplug lighthouse in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, was built between 1896 and 1899 using a difficult pneumatic caisson foundation method. Quicksand, delays, and extra federal funding complicated its construction, and a granite base was added in 1922. The light became obsolete after the Jamestown Bridge opened and was extinguished in 1941, then fell into severe decay and became the subject of research, legal disputes, and failed relocation plans. Local preservationists, led by Shirley Silvia and the Friends of Plum Beach Lighthouse, secured its transfer, restoration, and reactivation, preserving it as a rare surviving offshore light.
