The Donnaha Site, on the Yadkin River near East Bend, North Carolina, preserves the remains of a village occupied from about A.D. 1000 to A.D. 1500. Its unusual value lies in the survival of well-preserved organic material, which provides a rare view of everyday life. Evidence shows that the inhabitants depended chiefly on wild foods such as deer, turkey, fish, shellfish, and nuts, while maize horticulture remained secondary rather than forming the main basis of subsistence. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, the site is important for understanding long-term settlement and foodways along the Yadkin River.
