Smarts Mountain, a 3,238-foot peak in Lyme, New Hampshire, stands prominently south of the main White Mountains because Oliverian Notch separates it from higher terrain near Mount Moosilauke. With 2,190 feet of prominence, it is one of only twelve mountains in the state exceeding 2,000 feet in prominence. The mountain also divides two major drainage systems: water from its northwest and south sides reaches the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound, while its northeast side drains through the Baker, Pemigewasset, and Merrimack rivers to the Gulf of Maine. It is the southernmost significant New Hampshire mountain on the Appalachian Trail and has been the site of aircraft crashes in 1971 and 1996.
