This building was first conceived as a fireproof structure with iron window shutters and an iron floor, and it originally housed the county clerk, recorder, and county records. It served as the Knox County Hall of Records from 1854 to 1873, then as a public library from 1878 to 1978, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
