This early-19th-century Haddam, Connecticut home preserves a river valley domestic landscape from the years after the American Revolution, with its house, garden, and grounds reflecting household life around 1830. Built between 1794 and 1810, it is associated with Thankful Arnold, who raised 11 children there and remained after her husband’s death in 1823. The property stayed in the Arnold family for generations until Isaac Arnold, Thankful Arnold’s great-great-grandson, bought, restored, and gave it to the Haddam Historical Society in 1963. It has since stood as a preserved home focused on women’s domestic history, family work, widowhood, and everyday life in Connecticut’s river valley communities.
