Canyon Lake was formed following the construction of Mormon Flat Dam from 1923-25 by USDI, Bureau of Reclamation. Salt River Project manages the dam for water storage and power generation. Water stored in this reservoir is collected from the 13,000 square mile Salt River watershed. The Tonto National Forest was established in 1905 to protect much of this watershed, and also rehabilitate it.
