Nicely's Grocery Store, built in 1939, remained a neighborhood grocery where customers could buy food on credit accounts and receive home deliveries. When the building was new, the Masonic lodge occupied its upper floor after earlier meeting upstairs in the Johnson and Law Building on Lincoln Road and before that in a Babcock Lumber & Land Company office building. The store was associated with A. C. Nicely, with clerk and deliveryman Thad Compton, customer Eugene Wells, butcher Otha “Junior” Reagan, and Imelda and Helmer Nicely all pictured in connection with it. Carter's Barber Shop first operated in the back of the Nicely building, where barber A. R. Carter worked, and during Alcoa High School's undefeated football streak in 1954 he promised free haircuts to football players and band members as long as the Tornadoes kept winning.
