In the Upper Suwannee River Valley, people continue to make handmade items for decorative and daily use, reflecting the values, beliefs, and aesthetics of their community. These traditions include gourd birdhouses, first used by Native people thousands of years ago and still made locally to attract mosquito-eating purple martins, as well as quilting, remembered by Nancy Morgan through the quilting bees of her youth, when women gathered weekly at different homes to sew around a quilting frame, shared covered dishes, taught younger women the skills, and in late afternoon wrapped the finished quilt around a young girl to tell her she would be the next to be married. Family traditions also continue through work such as a christening dress made by Elizabeth Knight for her granddaughter from a pattern kept in their family for generations.
