Mount Thompson is a 13,494-foot summit on the Sierra Nevada crest in California, straddling the boundary between Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir Wilderness as well as Fresno and Inyo counties. Ranking as California’s 62nd-highest summit, it was named for Almon Harris Thompson. The first recorded ascent was made in 1909 by Clarence H. Rhudy and H. F. Katzenbach, and later notable route ascents included Norman Clyde’s Northwest Face climb in 1931 and Jack Sturgeon’s Southwest Face climb in 1939. Its alpine climate, Pacific-driven precipitation, and drainage toward both the Middle Fork Kings River and Bishop Creek reflect its prominent position on a major High Sierra divide.
