Mount Blue, a 3,187-foot mountain in western Maine, is a central feature of Mount Blue State Park and a popular hiking destination reached from Weld and Avon. Its steep, rocky trail climbs through mixed forest to a summit with a galvanized steel communications tower whose observation deck offers sweeping views, sometimes as far as Mount Washington and Sugarloaf. The mountain also reflects older layers of human history: it stands within Wabanaki homelands, near stone walls from farms cleared by Anglo-European settlers beginning in the late 1700s, and not far from Center Hill Cemetery, established in 1809. A proposed 1940s ski development was never built.
