Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in the San Lorenzo River watershed near Felton preserves old-growth coast redwoods, varied forest habitats, and the separate Fall Creek unit while also reflecting the area’s long industrial past. Its best-known grove covers about 40 acres and includes redwoods roughly 1,400 to 1,800 years old, reaching around 300 feet tall and more than 16 feet in diameter. Much of the surrounding forest was heavily logged in the 1800s for lumber and lime production before second-growth redwoods matured after logging declined by the 1920s. Preservation advanced through purchases and donations, and the park was officially established on August 15, 1954, becoming a central redwood park of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
