The Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment is a distributed observatory network created to capture the optical afterglow of gamma-ray bursts through four telescopes in Australia, Namibia, Turkey, and near Fort Davis, Texas. It developed from ROTSE-I, an earlier wide-field system that achieved a major milestone by detecting the first gamma-ray burst afterglow while the burst was still underway. After that design and the related Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System produced no other such detections, the project shifted away from a planned ROTSE-II toward ROTSE-III, using more conventional telescopes optimized for rapid slewing and automated operation. The project exemplifies modern astronomy’s move toward fast-response robotic networks for brief cosmic events.
