During World War II, from 1941 to 1946, Houghton College honored the men of the college who gave their lives for God and country: Richard T. Bennett, U.S.A.A.F.; Robert M. Danner, U.S.A.; Warren T. Dayton, U.S.A.A.F.; Walter F. Ferchen, N.A.F.; Merrill W. McKinley, U.S.A.A.F.; J. Merton McMahon, U.S.N.; Ralph L. Norton, U.S.A.; Henry E. Samuels, U.S.A.; John H. Smith, U.S.A.; and Carl M. Wagner, U.S.A.A.F. The memorial bears the words dulce et decorum est pro patria mori and was erected in A.D. 1956 through the kindness of H. Parks and Margaret Tucker.
