Galena, Missouri, is home to the famous Y Bridge, a 764-foot-long and 23-foot-wide bridge built in just over a year to replace an older steel bridge whose pilings remain visible to the south. It opened in November 1927, when approximately 5000 people attended the dedication, and is reported to be one of only three such bridges in the world. Its unusual design helped accommodate traffic around the steep bluff nearby. The James River lies to one side, and Table Rock Lake, a man-made lake associated with a hydro-electric dam and regional water project championed by Representative Dewey Short, a Galena native, lies to the other. The town takes its name from the mineral galena, Missouri's official state mineral, which has been found in the area with other minerals though it is not currently commercially mined there. Galena, whose primary content is lead, has been used for cosmetics, pencils, and batteries. Today Galena is known for its beautiful natural setting on the James River, with bald eagles, cranes, anglers, white bass, other abundant fish, fossils by the river, float trips, camping, cabins, and the historic town square.
