Pocahontas County was formed from Bath, Pendleton, and Randolph in 1821 and was named for Pocahontas, an Indian princess and friend of the Jamestown settlers. It was the site of the Battle of Droop Mountain on November 6, 1863, and includes the famous Cranberry Glades. Randolph County was formed in 1787 from Harrison and was named for Edmund Jennings Randolph, a Virginia statesman and soldier. It is the largest county in the state, and Federal dominance of Tygart's Valley in the Civil War largely determined control of West Virginia.
