Onaway State Park, a 158-acre recreation area on Black Lake in northern Michigan, was among the earliest parks established as Michigan created its state park system. Presque Isle County deeded land to the state in 1920, and the park was dedicated in 1921, with development building on an existing local park and nearby parcels. Its character was shaped over the 1920s and 1930s by added campgrounds, trails, and entrance features, as well as Civilian Conservation Corps work and rustic stone structures designed by Ralph B. Herrick. Still used for camping and lakeside recreation, the park also contains the remnants of the Rainy River Cemetery and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
