Basin Mountain is a 4,827-foot summit in the Great Range of the Adirondacks, within Adirondack Park in Keene, and ranks as New York’s ninth-highest peak and one of the Adirondack High Peaks. Its name likely arose from surrounding basin-like landforms and was probably coined in 1857 by Orson Schofield Phelps and Frederick W. Perkins during an ascent of Mount Marcy, later appearing in writing in 1873 through surveyor Verplanck Colvin. A prominent but demanding destination in the High Peaks Wilderness, it is reached by several trail connections, and its alpine summit offers sweeping views of nearby peaks, valleys, and Upper Ausable Lake.
