Agathla Peak, also called Agathlan and Aghaałą́, rises south of Monument Valley in northern Arizona and stands more than 1,500 feet above the surrounding land. A prominent landmark near Kayenta, it is sacred to the Navajo, whose name for it gave rise to the English name and refers to “much wool.” Geologically, the peak is an eroded volcanic plug of volcanic breccia cut by minette dikes, part of the Navajo Volcanic Field on the southern Colorado Plateau and among its most prominent formations. Although climbing is now prohibited on the peak and nearby Navajo Nation lands, the first known ascent occurred on May 29, 1949.
