Built in 1901, the church was dedicated in memory of the Rev. Sam Black (1813 - 1899), who preached here in the 1880s - 90s. Born in Rupert and licensed in 1840, Black was a Methodist circuit rider for almost fifty years. A spiritual landmark, Sam Black Church became a place name on highway maps even though no post office bore the same name.
